The “Japanese 4 Seasons” is inspired by “The Pillow Book”.

この作品は、『枕草子』にインスパイアされました

It is a book of observations and musings recorded by Sei Shonagon during her time as court lady to Empress Consort Teishi in the middle of Heian Period in Japan.

『枕草子』は平安時代、中宮定子に仕えていた清少納言が日常の中を観察したり、物思いにふけっている様子を記録した本です

Heian Period : The period between 794 and 1185.

平安時代：794～1185年

Japanese 4 Seasons expresses the first column of “The Pillow Book”.

この作品は、『枕草子』の冒頭に記されている日本の四季を表現しています

～Spring～

In spring, the dawn.

When the slowly paling mountain rim is tinged with red, and wisps of faintly crimson-purple cloud float in the sky.

春は、あけぼの。

やうやう白くなりゆく山ぎは、すこしあかりて、紫だちたる雲の、細くたなびきたる。

～Summer～

In summer, the night.

Moonlit nights, of course, but also at the dark of the moon, it’s beautiful when fireflies are dancing everywhere in a mazy flight.

And it’s delightful too to see just one or two fly through the darkness, glowing softly.

Rain falling on summer night is also lovely.

夏は、夜。

月のころは、さらなり。闇もなほ。

螢のおほく飛びちがひたる、また、ただ一つ二つなど、ほのかにうち光りて行くも、をかし。

雨など降るも、をかし。

～Autumn～

In autumn, the evening.

The blazing sun has sunk very close to the mountain rim, and now even the crows, in threes and fours or twos and threes, hurrying to their roost, are a moving sight.

Still more enchanting is the sight of a string of wild geese in the distant sky, very tiny.

And oh how inexpressible, when the sun has sunk, to hear in the growing darkness the wind, and the song of autumn insects.

秋は、夕ぐれ。

夕日のさして、山のはいと近うなりたるに、烏の、寝どころへ行くとて、

三つ四つ、二つ、三つなど、飛びいそぐさへ、あはれなり。

まいて、雁などの列ねたるが、いと小さく見ゆるは、いとをかし。

日入りはてて、風の音、虫の音など、はたいふべきにあらず。

～Winter～

In winter, the early morning.

If snow is falling, of course, it’s unutterably delightful, but it’s perfect too if there’s a pure white frost, or even just when it’s very cold, and they hasten to build up the fires in the braziers and carry in fresh charcoal.

But it’s unpleasant, as the day draws on and the air grows warmer, how the brazier fire dies down to white ash.

冬は、つとめて。

雪の降りたるは、いふべきにもあらず。霜のいと白きも。

また、さらでもいと寒きに、火などいそぎおこして、炭もてわたるも、いとつきづきし。

昼になりて、ぬるくゆるびもていけば、火桶の火も、白き灰がちになりて、わろし。
